What is an Icon?
For many, icons might be considered beautiful pieces of art. For some it might be considered sinful graven images and idolatry. For Orthodox Christians, icons are windows into heaven that help create an environment of prayer and contemplation.
To many who enter an Orthodox Church for the first time, the icons are the things that will first draw their attention. Many people who come from other Christian traditions are not always used to the portrayal and veneration of icons that is common in the Orthodox Church. You will walk into an Orthodox Church and you may see people touching icons, kissing them, praying in front of them and the whole scene can be sort of jolting to someone who’s not really used to it.
In fact though, Christian images and precursors to icons have been found from as early as the 3rd century.
This is a painting of a shepherd. Referring either to the book “The Shepherd of Hermas” or Christ himself as the good shepherd and dated from the 3rd Century.
Why Do Orthodox Use Icons?
For the Orthodox believers, icons are a normal and vital part of their lives of prayer and they serve a vital role in the church:
Icons teach us our history
In the early Church, we spent almost 400 years without an official collection of books that we now call the Bible. Also, there were very few copies of the Scriptures, and not all Christians were literate. You may think to yourself, that makes sense for why we had icons then, but we have the Bible now. But even today, we have a huge contingency of Christians who do not read–not because they are illiterate but simply because reading is not as common of a practice as it has always been as society as pushed us towards media like TV, the internet and various streaming services. Icons teach us the stories of Scripture and the lives of the saints–the whole story of salvation–and invite us to be a part of that history.
Icons teach us our theology
Icons are no ordinary paintings. They are full of symbolic meaning to convey the theological truths of the True Faith. From the colors to the stances of the people, to the scenery and lighting, icons teach us who God is, and who we are in relation to Him.
Icons draw us near to the saints
We believe in a Church that is united across both space and time. In other words, the saints that have preceded us are just as much a part of the Living Body of Christ as our own friends and family. Just as we might cherish an image of a loved one who is no longer physically with us (and we might carry that image with us or even kiss it when we miss them), we cherish the images of Christ and the saints as images of those we love and who guide us in our own lives.
Icons call us to the heavenly realm
At our church, we were blessed to have icons in the church written by Armia Elkatcha and his wife Meritte Wadea. Armia graduated with a degree in fine arts and studied under the famed Coptic Iconographer Isaac Fanous for over 5 years.
Below is a sample of our icons with some brief explanations of their meanings or the saints they are portraying.
Armia also can be commissioned to create icons for individuals. You can see more of his work and order a replica of one of these or a custom icon here
This is one reason that icons are not painted realistically; they are meant to draw us not to themselves, but beyond the images to the heavenly reality they depict. Unlike other art and certainly unlike idols, icons do not allow us to get stuck in the beauty of this world but call us to be a part of a world transfigured by God’s grace and love.
Opposition to the use of Icons
There are some in various Christian denominations that believe the use of icons in prayer actually goes against the teaching of scripture. Most famously, this quote from Deuteronomy is mentioned:
"You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them" (Deut 5:8,9).
We can see that God's emphasis to the people of Israel was that they would not bow down or serve the images. Paganism was rampant during the time of the Israelites and God was warning them that worship is reserved for Him alone.
This does not mean that no images were ever made. In fact, we see in the book of Numbers that God Himself commanded Moses to make a serpent out of bronze to save the people. Later on, this incident was mentioned by Christ as a symbol of His crucifixion. "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:14,15)
Also in the Old Testament we read about God commanding Moses to build the Ark of the Covenant with two golden cherubim on top of it. These images of cherubim were not a violation of the second commandment, because the aim was not to worship the angels represented by these images, but rather they were to call attention to the God of Israel whom the angels praise and the archangels worship.
We never worship icons or saints as worship is reserved for God alone, but rather, we venerate them because in honoring the saint, we honor Christ who they followed in their lives.
